The date of May 19, 1919 is one of the turning points in the history of the Republic of Turkey. May 19, the date on which Atatürk set foot in Samsun, is also celebrated as the “Youth and Sports Day”. Ataturk saw that those who would lead the Turkish nation forward during the National Struggle and those who would oppose outdated ideas were young ideas. For this reason, the concept of ”youth” has a separate importance for Atatürk. When Atatürk spoke about young people often, he expressed youth as an idea, that is, innovation in the idea, except for the age limit. His words are very meaningful:”Young minded means a true minded person who sees and understands the truth.” (1)

Might May 19th, which Atatürk gave to the youth and celebrated as the “Youth and Sports Day” In order to better understand the importance of the date, we need to remember the Istanbul-Samsun trip that Atatürk made between May 16th and 19th, 1919 once again. We need to remember the date of May 19th, which Atatürk gave to the youth and celebrated as the “Youth and Sports Day”……….. Dec………..

One of the important events in the history of the Republic of Turkey is Atatürk’s landing in Samsun. While the TurkMilleti was looking for salvation remedies in the deteriorating conditions after the First World War, a great leader Mustafa Kemal Ataturk appeared and set foot in Samsun, opening the way to “Salvation”. Therefore, Atatürk’s journey starting from Istanbul on May 16-19, 1919 symbolizes a period of liberation. The importance of setting foot in Samsun is understood from the fact that Atatürk started his Great Speech with his exit to Samsun on May 19, 1919, so let’s try to briefly describe this journey now.

Samsun was one of the important points for the occupation forces. It had great strategic importance and was the most convenient and reliable gateway from the Black Sea to Central Anatolia. The British had landed a military unit in Samsun on March 9, 1919. In response to this, the ascent of a lieutenant named Hamdi from the Turkish Machine Gun unit to the mountain by taking his soldiers (2)drew attention to this region, and after complaints from the British High Commissioner that the Turkish people were armed, it was decided to send a reliable commander to this region with extraordinary powers. This commander was Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, and Ataturk had been feeling sorry for this desperate situation the country was in for a long time and wanted to move to Anatolia to do something. This is an impossible opportunity for Him. Atatürk describes the conversation between Atatürk and Sultan Vahdettin before the Istanbul-Samsun trip as follows:(3) Dec.

“-Pasha, Pasha!… You have served the state a lot so far!All of these have now been entered into this book (this is a history book)! Forget about all this, he said, the service you are going to do now may be more important than all of them…Pasha, Pasha…You can save the state!…

I was stunned by these words. I wonder if Vahdettin is talking to me sincerely?…Did you mention that… did he regret all his actions?Did he realize that he had been deceived? But, I considered it creepy to engage in other topics with such a comment, I responded to myself:

-Thank you for your trust in personality and for giving me so many faces…please trust that I will not spare my best service…”

Ataturk had the feeling that his plans might have been detected in this speech, but there was a “Turkish Nation” waiting for Him and trusting Him.

Friday May 16, 1919, Atatürk and the ship captain together with 18 people were to accompany the voyage except for Ismail Hakkı Durusu. The names of these 18 people were as follows:(4) III. Corps Commander Staff Colonel Refet Bey (General Bele), Chief of Staff of the Inspectorate Staff Colonel Monastylli Kazim Bey (General DIRIK), Minister of Health of the Inspectorate Doctor Colonel Ibrahim Tali Bey (FORESEEN), Deputy Chief of Staff Kurbay Lieutenant Colonel Mehmet Arif Bey(AYICI), Director of the Intelligence and Political Branch of the Headquarters Erkan-ı Cadet Staff Major Husrev Bey(GEREDE), Commander of the Inspectorate Artillery Artillery Major Refik Bey(SAYDAM), Chief of the Inspectorate Captain Javad Abbas (GÜRER), Staff Member Captain Mumtaz (TÜNAY), Staff Member Captain Ismail Hakkı (EDE), Inspectorate Warrant Officer Captain Ali Şevket (ÖNDERSEV), Headquarters Commander Captain Mustafa Vasfi (SÜSOY), Chief of Staff Warrant Officer and Inspector Pen Supervisor Lieutenant Arif Hikmet (REALCI), Maintenance Officer Lieutenant Abdullah (KUNT), Second Assistant Inspector Lieutenant Muzaffer (KILIÇ), Cipher Clerk, First Class Clerk Faik (AYBARS), Assistant Cipher Clerk, Fourth Class Clerk Memduh (ATASEV).

Friday May Galata Ataturk accompanied by people with the name of “Bandırma” leaves the Galata dock on the afternoon of Friday May 16, 1919 with an old steamer “Bandırma”. On Saturday, May 17, 1919, the Bandırma Ferry arrives at Inebolu at 21.40. On Monday, May 18, 1919, the expected journey comes to an end. Passengers are taken to the Central pier by boats from the place called Galleon Cape. Ismail Yurtsever, the owner of one of these boats, says that he did not know Ataturk at that time,he tells that he saw Ataturk on the boat and in Samsun with a legion hood with a wide collar and a heart on his head. (5)

Ataturk was a soldier on duty during the journey that started from Istanbul and ended in Samsun, and his clothing was appropriate for this, but a few days after he set foot in Samsun, he would act as a civilian, not a soldier.

The view that Atatürk saw when he left for Samsun was not very bright. There were British occupation forces in the city. Ponticians were walking around the streets. The people were unable to protect themselves. Ataturk always thought about these problems during his stay at the Hintika Palace, which has been turned into a museum today, the sleepless nights he spent on the trip had not ended; now the sleepless nights were starting here. But, as long as this perseverance was in Him and those who thought like Him, no obstacle was insurmountable.

In short, this journey, which we are trying to give, became a turning point for the Turkish Nation and was the beginning of salvation. He also presented May 19 to the Turkish youth because of the importance of the date of May 19, 1919, when he stepped on Anatolian soil in Samsun to launch the National Struggle. As we mentioned at the beginning of our article, the concept of youth describes innovation in ideas in a general sense.

Atatürk said“Young people!Young people who have undertaken to realize my future ambitions!I am very pleased and happy that one day I will leave this hometown to a youth who understands me like you”(6) While he said that he also told about his trust in Turkish youth.

Atatürk’s words should be a guide for all of us:“Seeing me does not necessarily mean seeing my face. If you understand and feel my ideas, my feelings, that’s enough”(7). It is possible to understand Atatürk by knowing his experiences and ideas. Therefore, we should always take into account the difficulties experienced in the establishment of the Republic of Turkey and celebrate May 19th by always taking care of Atatürk’s trust.
