James Webb Reveals a 650°C Temperature Divide on a Distant Exoplanet

A planet 1,300 light-years from Earth is helping astronomers see alien weather in a new way. Using observations from the James Webb Space Telescope, researchers have mapped differences around the edge of WASP-17 b’s atmosphere, finding a striking temperature contrast between its morning and evening sides. The result moves exoplanet science beyond treating distant atmospheres as though they were the same everywhere.

What did the James Webb Space Telescope discover?

In a study published in Nature Astronomy on October 14, 2026, an international research team applied a method called transmission strings mapping to WASP-17 b, a large, extremely hot gas giant orbiting close to its star. The technique uses changes in starlight passing through the planet’s atmosphere during a transit to study different regions around the atmospheric rim, or limb.

The researchers measured an estimated morning-side atmospheric temperature of about 858 kelvin and an evening-side temperature of approximately 1,522 kelvin — a difference of roughly 650 kelvin, equivalent to a temperature difference of approximately 650°C (1,170°F). These are modeled atmospheric conditions, not temperatures measured by a spacecraft on the planet’s surface; WASP-17 b does not have a solid surface like Earth.

Why is WASP-17 b so unusual?

WASP-17 b belongs to a class of planets known as hot Jupiters. These gas giants orbit extremely close to their host stars, experiencing intense radiation and dramatic atmospheric heating. WASP-17 b is also remarkably inflated: its diameter is nearly twice that of Jupiter, despite having less mass. Its low density has sometimes inspired comparisons to a marshmallow.

Because the planet is believed to be tidally locked, one hemisphere generally faces its star while the other faces away. Powerful winds and differences in heating can create complicated patterns at the boundary between day and night. The new results indicate that even the slim ring of atmosphere we observe during a transit is far from uniform.

How can Webb map weather on a planet so far away?

Scientists cannot simply take a close-up photograph of WASP-17 b’s clouds. Instead, they analyze tiny changes in the star’s light as the planet passes in front of it. Different gases absorb different wavelengths, and the amount of atmosphere encountered by that light varies with local temperature and atmospheric structure.

By examining observations from roughly 0.6 to 12 micrometers in wavelength, the research team reconstructed variations from east to west and from equator to pole around the planet’s atmospheric limb. This adds spatial information to a field where many earlier analyses relied on a single averaged atmospheric profile.

The study also found that the measured abundances of water vapor (H₂O) and carbon dioxide (CO₂) could be described as approximately constant around the observed limb. That detail matters: large temperature contrasts do not necessarily mean every atmospheric ingredient varies in the same way.

Does this discovery mean the planet could support life?

No. WASP-17 b is a scorching gas giant, not an Earth-like world or a newly identified candidate for habitability. Its importance is methodological. Understanding how temperature, winds and chemistry differ across a giant planet helps researchers interpret the atmospheric signatures of other exoplanets more reliably.

For future studies of smaller planets, distinguishing regional atmospheric conditions may prevent scientists from mistaking an averaged signal for a complete picture. The technique offers a new way to test atmospheric circulation models against actual observations.

What happens next?

Astronomers can apply comparable three-dimensional approaches to other transiting exoplanets where observations are detailed enough. Researchers will also need to assess how consistently the method works across different planetary temperatures, sizes and chemical environments.

One of the biggest lessons from WASP-17 b is deceptively simple: a distant planet has geography in its atmosphere, even when it appears to us as little more than a dip in starlight. Webb is helping turn that faint signal into a more detailed picture of alien worlds.

Inside the discovery: the numbers behind the temperature gap

In the peer-reviewed research published on October 14, 2026, the team estimated a temperature of 858 K (approximately 585°C) at the morning terminator and 1,522 K (approximately 1,249°C) at the evening terminator. The central estimates differ by 664 K, described in the paper as an approximately 650 K contrast. These results have uncertainty ranges and should not be read as exact thermometer measurements.

Morning versus evening: what does that mean on a hot Jupiter?

The morning and evening limbs are the two transition regions between the planet’s permanent day and night hemispheres. They are not equivalent to two locations observed at sunrise and sunset on Earth. They describe the edges of the atmosphere through which starlight travels as WASP-17 b transits its host star. Comparing these regions provides a window into the transport of energy by the planet’s atmospheric circulation.

How the “transmission strings” technique works

During a transit, different wavelengths of starlight are absorbed at different atmospheric heights. Traditionally scientists average the signal over the entire planetary limb. In this study the researchers used the Harmonica model to represent the effective atmospheric edge as an angle-dependent curve, permitting spectra to be recovered for multiple positions around the limb.

The analysis combined Webb observations from NIRISS/SOSS, NIRSpec/G395H and MIRI/LRS, covering roughly 0.6–12 micrometers. The method recovered differences not only from the western morning limb to the eastern evening limb but also between equatorial and higher-latitude regions. Importantly, this is an inference from transit spectroscopy and models, not a direct photograph of the planet’s weather.

The chemistry: water, carbon dioxide and possible clouds

Water vapor has prominent absorption features between about 1 and 3 micrometers, while carbon dioxide contributes an important feature near 4.5 micrometers. The researchers found that their data could be modeled with approximately constant H₂O and CO₂ abundances around the observed limb, despite the strong temperature contrast.

The authors also discuss how the temperature range may intersect the conditions in which different silicate or salt aerosols can form. However, they did not establish a detailed map of cloud composition in this study. More sensitive observations will be needed before claims about regional cloud types can be made.

What researchers know — and what remains uncertain

The study offers a substantial advance in atmospheric mapping, but the retrieved temperatures depend on spectral analysis, modeling assumptions and observational uncertainties. Researchers assumed north–south atmospheric symmetry to simplify the reconstruction. The paper also notes a trade-off: obtaining spatial information around the limb requires relatively broad wavelength bins and introduces larger transit-depth uncertainties than some traditional methods.

Future measurements — particularly improved mid-infrared spectra — could help constrain aerosol properties and test whether the mapped structures remain consistent over time. These observations will also provide stronger tests of global circulation models for intensely irradiated giant planets.

Why this discovery matters beyond WASP-17 b

The larger breakthrough is methodological. Seeing a distant planet as a dynamic, three-dimensional atmosphere rather than one averaged spectrum can reduce misleading interpretations of its temperature and chemistry. The ability to compare regional structures may eventually strengthen atmospheric studies of a wider range of exoplanets, though applying the same technique to smaller worlds will be more challenging because their signals are weaker.

Frequently asked questions

How far away is WASP-17 b?

It is approximately 1,300 light-years from Earth, so it cannot be reached by current spacecraft technology.

What does a 650-degree difference mean?

The research indicates a roughly 650-kelvin temperature difference between the morning and evening atmospheric limbs. A temperature difference of 650 kelvin is also a difference of about 650°C.

Did scientists find gemstones on this planet?

No physical gemstones were detected in this study. Colorful descriptions of the mapped atmospheric structure are metaphors, not evidence of jewels or crystals.

    Fascinating!

A marshmallow, hot Jupiter twice the size!

I’m still just blown away by the discovery of the lava tube cave on Mare Tranquillitatis.

I submitted a nomenclature to the IAU of ‘ Domus Antrum’ cave home, as this is to be the site of the first lunar base.
