Has Noah’s Ark Been Found in Türkiye? New Evidence from Ağrı Sparks Debate

English news cover reading Has Noah’s Ark Been Found? with the Durupınar Formation and Ağrı Region landscape in Türkiye
,

A boat-shaped formation in Ağrı Province, eastern Türkiye, is once again at the center of one of history’s most enduring mysteries. During a major 2026 field campaign at the Durupınar Formation, researchers used ground-penetrating radar, LiDAR, high-precision GPS and 3D mapping, while collecting hundreds of soil and core samples for laboratory analysis.

The new work has renewed international interest in the question: could this unusual formation be connected to the story of Noah’s Ark? The findings are intriguing, but researchers themselves are clear about one crucial point — Noah’s Ark has not been scientifically confirmed as found.

Has Noah’s Ark actually been found?

No. At this stage, there is no verified scientific evidence proving that the Durupınar Formation is Noah’s Ark. The 2026 research has produced new subsurface data and a large set of samples, but those results still need detailed laboratory and multidisciplinary analysis.

Prof. Dr. Cenker Atila, who leads the research project, has warned that headlines claiming the Ark has “definitely been found” are misleading. Ağrı Governor Önder Bozkurt has also stated that no definitive scientific conclusion has yet been reached.

What is the Durupınar Formation?

The Durupınar Formation is a striking boat-shaped geological feature near Doğubayazıt in Ağrı Province, Türkiye. It drew major attention after being identified in aerial imagery in 1959 by Turkish mapping officer İlhan Durupınar, whose name the formation now carries.

Its elongated outline has fueled speculation for decades. Some researchers argue that the shape can be explained by natural geological processes, while others believe the site deserves deeper archaeological and geophysical investigation.

What did researchers do in 2026?

The latest field campaign ran from 28 June to 11 September 2026 under the direction of Prof. Dr. Cenker Atila of Sivas Cumhuriyet University. The multidisciplinary project involved roughly 20 researchers from five countries and was carried out with official permissions.

The team created high-resolution maps of the area using LiDAR, 3D modelling and precise GPS measurements. They also conducted ground-penetrating radar scans to examine structures beneath the surface without excavation.

What did the ground-penetrating radar show?

According to the university’s preliminary reports, the radar work detected subsurface anomalies, including areas with comparatively regular edges, intersecting features and void-like zones. The geological layers were examined to depths of roughly 70 metres in parts of the study area.

That sounds dramatic, but an anomaly on a radar image is not the same as proof of a human-made structure. Different rock layers, fractures, sediment changes and natural cavities can also produce unusual radar signatures. The patterns therefore need to be interpreted together with geological, archaeological and laboratory evidence.

Why do the 366 samples matter?

One of the most important parts of the 2026 project was the collection of 366 soil and core samples from depths ranging from about 1 to 15 metres. The samples were sent to laboratories at Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University for carbon-isotope work, age analysis and studies of possible organic material.

Researchers are looking for clues that could distinguish ordinary geological material from possible cultural fill, fossilised organic matter or other evidence of past human activity. Earlier preliminary observations also raised interest in differences in carbon levels between samples from inside and outside parts of the formation, but those observations are not proof of ancient timber or a vessel.

Why are “Noah’s Ark found” headlines premature?

Because the strongest claims have not yet been demonstrated. No publicly verified piece of worked timber, construction hardware, unmistakable ship architecture or securely dated archaeological material has been presented as evidence that the formation is an ancient vessel.

The current research is best understood as a serious attempt to test competing explanations. It may reveal important information about the formation’s geology and history even if the final conclusion is that the site is entirely natural.

Could the formation be completely natural?

Yes. That remains one of the main scientific possibilities. Boat-like shapes can emerge through erosion, landslides, differential weathering and the interaction of different rock and sediment layers. The visual resemblance alone cannot establish that a structure was built by people.

This is why the 2026 project matters: radar data, sample chemistry, age measurements and geological mapping can be compared instead of relying only on the formation’s appearance.

What would count as convincing evidence?

A scientific case for an ancient constructed vessel would require several independent lines of evidence pointing in the same direction. That could include clearly human-made architectural elements, worked timber or fasteners found in a secure archaeological context, reliable dating, and a structure whose internal organisation cannot reasonably be explained by geology.

Until evidence of that quality is documented and independently evaluated, the most accurate description remains: an intriguing formation under active investigation, not a confirmed discovery of Noah’s Ark.

When will researchers know more?

The fieldwork phase has ended, but the laboratory and interpretation stages are continuing. Sivas Cumhuriyet University has said that the samples and geophysical data will undergo detailed analysis, with broader scientific reporting expected during 2027.

That means the most important part of the story may still be ahead. Laboratory results could help researchers determine whether the unusual signals are best explained by natural geology or whether there are signs that require further archaeological investigation.

The bottom line

The Durupınar Formation in Ağrı has produced enough new data to justify continued scientific attention, but not enough to declare one of history’s greatest mysteries solved. The 2026 project is notable for its scale, modern imaging methods and extensive sampling — and for the research team’s insistence that extraordinary claims must wait for extraordinary evidence.
